In 2008, BTMU acquired Union Bank, which was headquartered in San Francisco, but has most of its offices in LA.

BTMU is trying to change the Union Bank a bit -- I was transferred to Union about 1 1/2 years ago to work in project finance. I provide laons mainly for natural gas fired generation plans and renwable energy plants.

This is a tough position for me, very challenging. it's a business dominated by white men and I'm the only one here from BTMU. But we are merging our business platform with Union's, so the role is going to be even more challenging going forward. Everything is quite political -- the Union people like to say that I am a rogue trader or a spy. But I am starting to love this group and these people, and I feel like I have to protect this group from BTMU sometimes if something unfair were to happen.

My husband also works in project finance, for BTMU in Tokyo, so we are physically separated. This is very hard. But I am enjoying my time in Santa Monica, where I play golf, tennis, go running on the beach, and I even surf -- I'm very athletic now. I do my best to be more American and get used to the culture, and I have not been back to Japan in a year and a half. Funny things happen, though.
