Corporations and Environmental Sustainability

Environmental conservation and sustainability has been viewed over the years as public relations activity and away of maintaining good relations with the community and other stakeholders like the government under c they operate. This has however significantly changed and the environmental conservation and sustainability is a social responsibility that any business or organization with a long-term vision has to take into account, plan for and effectively execute in order to not only earn acceptability by the government regulatory bodies, but also to contribute to their own future existence.

Proper and safe disposal of waste material and refuse is one of the major ways that corporations are gauged in their commitment to environmental protection and conservation. Corporations need to take deliberate steps to ensure their wastes area correctly categorized and disposed off in the recommended and approved manner. Toxic wastes must not find their way into the natural resources like the water bodies and fallow land for agriculture as this will negatively impact on the ecosystem and threaten the livelihood of the locals. This measure must be accompanied by the firm manufacturing only the products that are not harmful to the environment as a long-term sustainability measure (Armacell, 2015).

Though overlooked by most corporations, the packaging standards significantly affect the environment since it is the package that often ends up improperly disposed off by the end user of products. As the environmental manager, it will be an area of focus towards ensuring the protection of environment through steering the organization toward sustainable packaging. This can be pursued through use of packages that can find their way back to the firm and be reused, which will need a well set up recollection system in place. The sustainable packaging can also be achieved through using materials that are easily biodegradable and reusable at the domestic levels (Coca-Cola Company, 2012).

Yet another paramount measure that a corporation can take in ensuring the sustainability of the environment is initiating environmental rehabilitation exercises. These activities include the engagement of the local community in planting of trees and educating the locals on the importance of environmental rehabilitation and conservation activities like cleaning of rivers and waterways. When the corporations work in collaboration with the community to initiate and run such programs, then the environmental protection becomes more sustainable in the long-term basis as well as cheaper to run since the community will often….....
