Code of Conduct and Ethics Policy

Every police officer is mandated to abide by an ethical code so as to ensure the execution of effective and proper services and provide for the safety of citizens as a whole. It is a mandate for all officers of the law to be fully cognizant of the ethical duties and accountabilities that are linked to their work positions. In addition, each and every police officer must at all times endeavor to match and achieve the highest conceivable standards of professional policing. These values and philosophies are intended to serve as a reminder and guide for police officers in how they implement their duties and responsibilities. In addition, such philosophies and values serve not only as regulatory and guiding passages, but also serve as a way of counseling. Ethics are an important aspect of policing, particularly where differentiation between legal and illegal is vital (DeShon, 2000).

Code of Conduct

As the new Chief Tidewater Police Department, I am firmly convinced that police officers ought to represent themselves in such a manner that each officer maintains and espouses the fidelity to the law, integrity, and respect that his or her duties and responsibilities involve. I have been made aware that within the last year there have been several civil law cases filed against this particular police department in which police misconduct was alleged.

From now henceforth, it must be clear that this police department will not tolerate police misconduct of any manner. The personnel of this police department have to conduct themselves in an ethical and moralistic manner. For this reason, there will be enactment and implementation of a new Code of Conduct and Ethics policy. In particular, this new Code of Conduct will be made up of ten codes. These are as follows:

1. Take into account the constitutional and civil rights of each individual.

2. Ensure that there is compliance with the laws of the nation and the code of behavior laid out by the Police Department.

3. Demonstrate behavior and action that is not only proficient but also one that is impartial. Police officers are not allowed to permit the manifestation of hostility, emotion, and/or predeterminations in manipulating decisions.

4. Demonstrate good morals at all times. Individuals are not allowed to use the Tidewater police department for any personal gains or special favors.

5. Exhibit high esteem of preference of this police department and knowledge received on persons within the precinct.

6. Enforce and carry out the law in a correct and polite manner.

7. Police Officers will not be involved in the mistreatment of offenders. Self-control and restraint is to be….....
