Uncontrolled Asthma and Allergies; Application of Nursing Theories

Asthma is often referred to as altered immune response, which results in inflammatory conditions that constricts the small airways leading to increased mucous production and bronchospasm. When experiencing asthmatic attacks, I often have difficulty in breathing, shivering, loss of energy and loss of appetite. My central concern has always been how to ensure I am not only able to take care of myself but also any other younger member of the family in managing the asthmatic condition and prevent possible attacks.

The theories that have been relevant in managing and living through the asthma and allergies that I have are as follows; most significant is the Bandura theory of self-efficacy. This is the emphasis that points towards the individual's behavior and skills in line with managing the condition he suffers from. Through this theory, I have focused on the behaviors that help in reduction of the frequency of attacks. I have instilled behavior changes, both social and environmental, that have increased my general and asthma specific self-efficacy expectancies. I have identified the risk factors to the asthmatic attacks and come up with individualized self-management and assessment of the same.

The other theory Orem's self-care deficit nursing theory which has been instrumental in managing the allergies and asthma related complications. This refers to the difference between the knowledge that the patient has and that which the medics have. I have often implemented this through going to the health care providers for regular advise and intervention in times of acute attacks and allergies that are beyond my control.

The other concept that has been instrumental in management of the asthma and allergy that I suffer is the modeling and role modeling theory which treats each patient as unique and not same as the next. This is an approach that has not only enabled me to manage my condition, but also to help each young person I come across who suffers from asthmatic attacks and allergies. I have often sought to understand the condition of the individual and the occasioning factors without presuming that the complications are occasioned by the same things that occasion mine.

The biopsychosocial model of nursing also comes in handy in managing my allergies and asthma. This theory presumes that there are biological, psychological and social factors that contribute to the health and well-being of an individual.
