John J. Nance presents to his audience a technical detective story in the form of his novel Final Approach. The book is primarily based upon how and why the North American Airline, Flight 255 crashed. On a rainy night, when the whether conditions seems to be awful, the North American Airline 255 flying to Kansas, descends from the turbulent sky and mysteriously crashes. Its crew had previously informed the passengers of the airline that the skies were safe: they obviously lied The incident happens to be one of the most shocking aviation catastrophes of the decade. A large number of passengers and crewmembers die during the horrifying accident. The public and the technical staff of the airline are left in awe, since according to them it should have never happened in the first place. Joe Wallingford, the main character of the novel, is then assigned by the National Investigation Safety Board, the duty to investigate and discover the reasons for the Flight 255 to crash (John J. Nance, Final Approach).

The news switches the entire media into frenzy and at this point Joe realizes that he is fighting against time.
