Construction methods

In constructing this coat, it is important to ascertain that all the pieces including the shoulder seams and the collar are well sized and aligned. The blended wool material should give the coat a good structure as a result of the fabric stiffness.

In addition, the curve of the pattern should be set at the high shoulder well fitting into the pea coat's body. The length of the coat should be measured from the seam at the point where the collar seam joins the body to the hem, and that should be 32.5." this length however, should be slightly longer to allow sewing of the ends. The sleeves of the coat are the most critical of all the pieces; they are measured from the seam joining the shoulder to the cuff. This needs to be a straight line and not following the elbow bend and in this design and size the measurement is 25.
" Here the measurement should be taken from the middle of the neck, under the collar all the way to the cuff, along the elbow bend.

When joining the shell and the lining, the lining (polyester) should be 1 inch shorter and has the shell for the center panels. All the seams are sown together; the sleeves and the collar are added for the two sets (Shell and lining). The sewing together can be done either by hand or machine. The shell is then turned inside out then they are layered right sides attached by turning the lining right side out into the shell. The corners and the seam allowances are then neatly trimmed after which the whole coat is pulled out through a gap left on one side of the seam. After pulling the coat and setting it right, the gap is then hand sown. The picture below is a graphical representation of the construction process.
