Jones acknowledges that America is stuck in Afghanistan for some time and, therefore, must take a special effort to effectuate changes that will be long-lasting. The key to any lasting change in Afghanistan, Jones believes is to build it from the bottom-up. This requires that America abandon any attempts to build entirely from the top down. It would be more prudent to develop a bottom up strategy. The window to do so is there. Many Afghans detest the Taliban for trying to impose their ideology on them and are open to change. Obtaining the support of the local population is the key to the success of this program, Jones believes, and soliciting tribal, religious and other local leaders to assist in this process is crucial and mandatory. In the short-term ensuring these local populations with proper security is the first step as many of these local tribes and villages have tried to resist the Taliban but have been outmanned.

Jones advocates that America do everything that it can to support these efforts. This support should include village "community watch" programs and finding ways for organizations like the Afghan army to support village level forces and assisting them whenever possible. Such support would give local populations reason to ally themselves with the national government.

As history has demonstrated, Afghanistan has been a tough battle ground. Throughout history military actions in Afghanistan have met with failure but America has the opportunity to change that trend. In his book, Seth Jones has laid out the formula for doing so. Hopefully the American government has the resolve to follow his recommendations and bring out about a lasting change that allows the Afghan people to live peacefully.
