Indeed, it could not be considered humanitarian to withdraw public housing assistance to those already so terribly afflicted by the events of the hurricane and its aftermath. However, it is most certainly necessary for Harris County and Houston to achieve some sort of long-term resolution as it is now clear that so many transplants have inevitably become integrated into the Harris County public housing system.

This is an issue which is only further complicated by the close relationship between the Harris County labor pool and the consistently prickly issue of immigration. At present, like most contexts in Texas, "Houston has an estimated 3,000 day workers who frequent 29 street intersections looking for work. On weekends, their numbers reach 5,000." (AP, 1) This is to say that there are, today, so many individuals seeking employment in Texas at immigrant wages that the Housing Department is doubly burdened by the need to accommodate the influx of low-rent residents.
