Health Care Focus

Any American who has paid the least bit of attention to the country's economic standing throughout the past few years has an understanding that the United States Health Care System is an entity that comes into the discussion of economics as quickly as any finance-based corporation or business. In recent years, the issue of health care has come into play within the discussion of economics, in addition to becoming one of the biggest industries within the country in terms of economic profit and business generation. In his article for the Kansas City Business Journal, journalist David Twiddy takes a look at how the connection between economics and health care has come to fruition within the state of Kansas, where health care remains one of the state's leading industries.

In Kansas, $10.2 billion in payroll was generated in the health care industry in 2011 alone, as more than 11% of the state's job holders are employed within the health care industry (Twiddy 1). Additionally, hospitals, operating within the health care field contribute significantly to the state economy, fielding nearly 74,000 jobs and funneling $4.2 billion annually in direct labor spending. In viewing the health care system within Kansas, one can immediately see that the economic cash flow in and out of the system is significant, and such a flow affects many individuals residing within the state.

In viewing the type of job creation and overall economic growth that the health care system has had within the state of Kansas, one can better understand how small state-level health care systems have the capacity to generate significant profits and revenue, which in turn provide for economic stability and prosperity within the respective states' health care systems. One could assert that successfully-run health care systems within the states do more to add to the bigger national economic picture than national mandates can. For example, recent "Obamacare" initiatives have shown less economic impact than is seen through the successful operation of state health care systems. One would imagine, then, that the successful operation of each respective state's own health care systems would serve to better the "bigger picture," in essence adding piece by piece to a greater whole -- the national economy and national health care system.
