Infants (less than a year old) would be in solitary play mode. Family members being present may help but the child will probably explore on their own even if others are present. During the second year, they will probably still tend to play by themselves but family and playmates can start to be integrated. Toddlers (the next two groups) will get into parallel play and associative play. Once the 5-8-year stage is reached, there is more of what is known as cooperative play and the students are fully engaged with each other (Rosemount, 2015).

Piaget defined play as a form of assimilation. Further, Piaget said it displays the child's efforts to make stimuli in his environment match his or her own concepts in life. However, Piaget cautioned that play does not automatically lead to development and growth and that it must be structured properly to get the highest amount of efficacy. For the play to work according to the theory, there has to be learning and mastery of new topics. For example, a child can become familiar with shapes like circles, squares and so forth. That would be one step. However, putting together a puzzle or matching a circle-shaped block into the matching circle-shaped hole would be a new step and new learning (Englebright-Fox, 2015).

Perhaps the biggest thing the art facilitator could learn is to provide structure and order to activities that are done at the art center. This is not to say that the child cannot choose at least some things like the colors they use and so forth. However, they cannot just be allowed to run wild and make a mess of things. It would also be helpful to have the children participate in putting things back in order so that they learn to clean up after themselves and respect the space of others. However, the biggest thing can be learned from early childhood news specialists and that is to not be afraid of a little mess (Fisher, 2015).
