Comparative Analysis of Three Narrative Study DissertationsThis analysis compares three dissertations that used a narrative study methodology. Each dissertation addresses different phenomena, but they share a common methodology. The comparative analysis reveals much about how this method can be applied.Dissertation 1: \"The introduction of a qualitative perspective in advanced psychological research training: Narrative of a mixed methods doctoral dissertation\" by Bogard & Wertz (2006)This study by Bogard and Wertz (2006) uses a mixed-methods approach but emphasizes a narrative regarding methodology dissertation research. The phenomenon under study is the development of qualitative research methods in advanced psychological research training. The study is set in an academic and research training environment where the focus is on advanced psychology. Data was collected through personal reflections and written narratives about the research process, along with interviews with participants in the research program. The study follows a reflective approach where the experiences of researchers and participants were documented and analyzed. The analysis was conducted through thematic coding and narrative synthesis. The turning point was the recognition of the value of qualitative research in psychological training, and in making connections between theory and practice. The major conclusion is that qualitative methods have immense value in psychological research, because they give in-depth insight that quantitative research (i.e., statistical data) cannot really give.Dissertation 2: \"A Narrative of Writing My Doctoral Dissertation\" by Soltani (2023)This dissertation by Soltani (2023) uses a narrative inquiry into the gendered experiences of women doctoral students. The study focuses on the experiences of women in educational studies, examining how they navigate the dissertation process. The setting is academic institutions, with a view on the gender situation of educational doctoral programs. Soltani (2023) used narratives from interviews with women doctoral students to obtain data about their dissertation experiences.
