This means that while jazz was restricted to a structure, popular music was not and hence when jazz musicians tried some de-structuring, the whole genre suffered seriously unlike popular music which was always open to improvisations and had never subscribed to one strict structure. The de-structuring of jazz has been linked to its slow death but there are people who defend this kind of improvisation because they feel that jazz like any other music form must be democratic in nature. Cornel West (1995) tries to defend Parker's de-structuring of jazz in his book, Keeping Faith: Philosophy and Race in America, "I use the term "jazz" here not so much as a term for a musical art form, as for a mode of being in the world, an improvisational mode of protean, fluid, and flexible dispositions toward reality suspicious of "either/or" viewpoints.
