Its most basic English translation is 'connections'" (Carroll para. 1). The account that Mr. Chung is overseeing is sizeable, and maintianing the connection that Mr. Chung has established is important to keep that account for the firm. Thus, Karen should herself become more flexible as she works to devlop the market in Taiwan and to accommodate the Taiwanese away of doing business rather than tryiung to make the Taiwanese American. She already realzies that the Taiwanese have not be3en assimilated, and she needs to recogtnize some of the reasons why, meaning that they have their own way of doing business and intned to maintain it.

What she needs to do in this case is come to an agreement with Mr. Chung that he will be given an office and other things he asks for when his workload is larger, meaning when more business is started with Taiwan and is under his purview.
She should indicate that she realizes that he will bring in more business as he states, but she needs to see some increase before she can justify the allocation of an office as he asks. At the same time, she has to recognize that she cannot control the Taiwanese end of the business as she does the American because she is out of her milieu, so if she sees Mr. Chung as the future of that end of the business, she needs to make it clear to him that he has to report certain matters to her in a way she can understand on a regular basis not because he is being watched more closely than others but because of language and cutlrual differences she wants to undestand.
