Established in 1979 pursuant to the Justice Systems Improvement Act of 1979, the stated mission of the BJS is to "collect, analyze, publish, and disseminate information on crime, criminal offenders, victims of crime, and the operation of justice systems at all levels of government."

1. The Web site's site map is prominently displayed in a tool bar at the top of the site's home page as well as a navigation tool to the left of the page.

2. As a leading resource for law enforcement agencies, the BJS provides crime mapping resources that are available in graphic form as well as data table and spreadsheet formats; this function can also be sorted according to the desired topic.


3. A multitude of law enforcement publications are available through the Web site.

4. A comprehensive listing of what types of data are collected is provided.

5. A listing of the data analysis tools used by the BJS is provided together with links for additional information about them.

1. The Web site's main page is poorly organized. Too much information as well as too many links and announcements are included, creating a confused appearance.
