While every lesson has something to offer, the modules on leadership theories and on ethics have proved especially helpful for me to gain insight into different styles and approaches. For example, Big Man theory, trait theory, and situational leadership theories all apply to the Army. to the unique characteristics and processes defining virtual teams, the same leadership theories and models that work for face-to-face teams may not be applicable to the virtual team. Although preliminary, this research is also instrumental in that the author provides a quantitative method to predict leader emergence, thereby improving the capacity of virtual teams to flourish. One of the main findings is that in virtual teams, leaders emerge through organic processes, linked possibly to personality traits even more so than team dynamics. Yun, Cox & Sims’s (2006) findings have important implications for practice. Self leadership is a product of not only the context of leadership (extrinsic factors), but also individual characteristics (intrinsic factors). Accordingly, it is imperative for organisations to cultivate an empowering leadership style, which can in turn enhance self leadership behaviour amongst followers.
