Management of Diversity

From America's elementary schools to the common parlance of the evolving American workplace, diversity has become one of the most popular buzzwords of today's current public discourse. How do we prepare our future leaders for a diverse and increasingly global marketplace? And more pressingly, a human resource manager must answer, in conjunction with the rest of the company leadership the question of how to manage the current world of American diversity with an eye upon the future? Management theorists Patrizia Zanoni and Maddy Janssens have noted a greater understanding of diversity management can either enable or constrain employer's success, depending on how the company chooses to deploy such diversity efforts. A company that is proud of its diverse employment and its diversity-positive policies will overall have greater success in managing relations between existing employees, and capitalizing upon its diversity-positive policies in a way to enhance its corporate revenue and image.

Dell Computers, for example, has made such a strong commitment to diversity; it not only reinforces the principles of diversity within its own workspace with an Equal Opportunity credo (as is common with many American businesses).
Dell also stresses that the suppliers Dell deals with must have a similarly diverse policy as the company itself. "Dell is committed to having a supply base that is reflective of our diverse customer base. We rely on the contributions of businesses that are owned by individuals of diverse backgrounds in order to deliver the best product, with the greatest value, to an increasingly diverse marketplace. Diverse suppliers that deliver creative product and service solutions have a positive impact on our customer relationships, the business community and population-at-large." (Dell Inc., 2005)

In other words, the company will not do business with suppliers, who discriminate -- to discriminate against one's own employees or customers means that one cannot do business with Dell. This is not simply good moral business practice, but….....
