NCFR

The National Council on Family Relations (NCFR) was founded in 1938. This is a professional organization with a mandate revolving around family research, practice and education -- the family is a key component of what it does (NCFR, 2013). As a professional organization, the NCFR draws its members from the profession, namely 3400 people who include a wide range of family-related professions. This organization is international, drawing its membership from over 35 countries (NCFR, 2013). Some of the professions that are included in the organization are researchers, demographers, those involved in therapy both marriage and family, educators, students, plus social workers, those in the health care profession especially public health, religious professionals and more (NCFR, 2013).

The organization is primarily involved in publishing. There are several publishing ventures of the NCFR. The main one comes in the form of three scholarly journals that the organization publishes. These journals are the Journal of Marriage and Family, Family Relations: Interdisciplinary Journal of Applied Family Studies, and Journal of Family Theory and Review (NCFR, 2013). These journals promote the latest thought and scholarly study on the subject of the family, and how family issues affect society as a whole (NCFR, 2013).

These include magazines aimed at the membership, a variety of resources for the education industry, policy papers on member interests, and career development material (NCFR, 2013). The organization also hosts an international conference every year, in order to facilitate the exchange of ideas. Further, the NCFR has a credentialing service, in order to provide credentials to people in the business and further legitimize the work that its members do (NCFR, 2013).

The NCFR defines its scope in terms of Family Science, which it defines as knowledge about the family. This is a development of the organization that takes a multidisciplinary approach to the family social unit, in contrast to other fields where the family is not always viewed in such a holistic manner (NCFR, 2013). The objectives of the organization are described on its website in pyramid format. These are to improve the ties of families, to engage the membership and unify it on thought, to produce innovative research that advances the field and to refine and clarify the definition of family studies (NCFR, 2013).
