The city of St. John in the province of New Brunswick, Canada, was named after St. John the Baptist, given that it was first sighted by French cartographer Samuel de Champlain on Saint John the Baptist's Day in 1604 . This territory is believed to have originally been inhabited by Passamaquoddy First Nations people (Winsor 1884, 107).

The city of Santa Fe, New Mexico, means holy faith in Spanish. The settlement was one of the first Spanish provinces in North America, later coming to be disputed between some of the most influential colonial powers on the continent and by the Native Americans themselves.
