Communication between nurses is an important instrument for professionals to deliver safe, quality healthcare as a team. Therefore, provision of quality healthcare in hospitals, depends entirely on the capability of the health practitioners to communicate efficiently between each other. However, little healthcare education addresses inter-professional communication, and this may account for the major medical errors. In addition, communication is significant given the interdependence of professionals and the important role they play towards providing quality patient care. Various factors constitute effective and ineffective communication (Manjlovich, Antonakos and Ronis, 2010). Respect is a factor that may facilitate effective communication while negligence is a factor that may facilitate ineffective communication.

The operating room is a crucial facility in the hospital setting. Many of the errors that arise in the operating room result from failed communication between the nurses, healthcare team and the patient. In addition, there are factors that may bring about failed communication in the operating room, especially when one is working with new nurse, or when a nurse is reliving another nurse from a shift. In such a case, it is important to provide the correct assessment regarding a patient who is to undertake an operation. My experience with a new nurse to the operating room provides an insight as to the importance of effective communication between health professionals.

The new nurse was in orientation for eight months, two months longer than the usual six months for nurses. Additionally, she was greatly experienced. She has worked as a nurse for nine complete years. This suggests that she must have interacted with many physicians, nurses and patients as a whole. Moreover, in the interaction, she must have proficiency in taking care of the patients and offering assistance to other health practitioners when handling patients. Nevertheless, it is possible that the nurse must have interacted with patients suffering from various illnesses.

Finally, such an experience only means that the nurse must have vast experience when communicating to patients, nurses and recognizes the importance of accuracy in the healthcare field.

However, to my dismay, when working with the nurse, I was disappointed concerning her way of doing things. As a practice, I took her to one of the patient's room to take some of the patient's information. This is a routine carried out in almost every hospital within a provided time interval. However, when she gave me the report on the next patient, it was apparent that she was not keen. This is because she did not check the patient's date for check up in the laboratory. Additionally, the dates were a year old, and she did not tell me that the particular patient had a cardiac history, which was un-cleared.

Owing to this, I had to react to the new nurse through communication. I was very disappointed because I questioned the experience of the nurse behind my mind. Owing to my experience, I knew how to handle the situation. Therefore, I asked for the clarity to verify why the nurse had ignored or rather neglected to provide the patient's information concerning a cardiac history. However, the nurse failed to understand my message and claimed I was shouting. Since the patient was about to have an operation, the nurse also claimed I intended to embarrass him in front of the surgeon, which was not the case. The nurse later got the job, but I still felt he had some serious communication issues.

From the case experience, I was aiming at clarity of the state, and that is why I inquired on why the nurse had not recognized the cardiac history of the patient. In so doing, I wanted a straightforward communication, which the nurse translated as otherwise. In addition, the question was….....
