Abstract
Globally, a nursing shortage is impeding the advancement of healthcare systems around the world. The nursing shortage refers to any situation in which the labor market cannot keep up with patient demands. Causes of the nursing shortage include poor working conditions leading to high turnover rates, insufficient nursing education programs, and lack of incentives for nurses to work in areas of critical concern. Effects of the nursing shortage include further staff shortages due to high stress environments and poor patient care—including higher rates of mortality and morbidity. Nursing shortages have affected almost… Continue Reading...
an unprecedented rate. As many new nursing students commence their program of study worldwide, the nursing shortage remains a critical area of concern. We need more and better qualified nurses to meet the worlds demand in providing top quality, evidence-based healthcare to a greater number of people. More nurses will help alleviate the burden of care, improve patient outcomes, and improve job satisfaction for nurses.
Many nurses also appreciate the flexibility the career allows in their personal and professional life. As demanding as the career can be, it also offers nurses the opportunities to serve in whatever capacity they are most suited, including positions of… Continue Reading...
indicated that in other specialties, nurse residency programs have been largely successful in seeking to stem nursing shortages. However, very few studies have attempted to evaluate as well as assess the effectiveness and success rate of nurse residency programs in relation to operating room nurses. It is important to note that there is a looming crisis in the horizon in relation to the shortage of operating room nurses (Brown, Belgard, Washington, and Grueso, 2017). The effects this continued shortage could have on perioperative nursing could be dire. Towards this end, the relevance of assessing the relevance of nurse residency programs in seeking to address this concern… Continue Reading...

negative stereotypes on film and television may be fueling the current nursing shortage as fewer children see nursing as a viable, rewarding, or high status profession (Muehlbauer, 2012). The ramifications of negative depictions of nurses also include a toxic work environment and unsupportive organizational culture.
Positive portrayals of nurses in film and television have been emerging to counteract decades of negative stereotypes. In 2001, the Center for Nursing Advocacy developed the Golden Lamp awards, given to “the best and worst depictions of nurses,” and lobbying for change through direct activism targeting film, television, and commercial advertising producers (Cohen, 2007, p. 1).… Continue Reading...
to expand the facilities to 40-bed units making the program to be highly financially rewarding. Nevertheless, the hospital has faced challenges in the last three decades because the unit has experienced the nursing shortages, moreover, the burn care program also suffered the staffing problems. The issues made Burn Care Unit to implement the Baylor Plan designed for nurses 12-hour shift every weekend, and weekdays. occur at a time when there is an acute nursing shortage. Aiken, Cheung & Olds (2009) state that employment opportunities in the health sector are expected to grow for registered nurses in comparison to other occupations. This expected growth is attributable to nursing shortage issues, which continue to place significant burdens on health education. Therefore, nurses are the at-risk population in relation to health education since the health education complexities affect their academic preparation.

providing general health and mental health services. These burdens come at a time when the system faces acute nursing shortage. Therefore, a suitable policy action for the government is one that does not exert further pressures and burdens on the current healthcare system and healthcare workforce. Given these factors, alternative care policy is the most suitable policy action since it would provide a good premise for addressing the needs of mental health patients without generating additional burdens and regardless of the severity of the condition. Existing evidence has demonstrated that alternative care under such a policy is effective in providing timely and effective mental health treatment and services.… Continue Reading...
