Aum Shinrikyo (Supreme Truth) is a doomsday cult that released nerve gas in the Tokyo subway system in March 1995, killing 12 and injuring thousands. At its peak, the cult boasted of a membership of over 10,000 in Japan and about 40,000 in Russia. After a crackdown in the wake of the 1995 attacks which included a death sentence for its leader, Shoko Asahara, its membership has understandably declined to about 650 "live-in" members and 1,000 lay members in Japan (Marshall, 1999).
Although the current leaders of the cult (renamed "Aleph" in 2000) insist that it is a benign sect now, the members still believe in the apocalyptic teachings of Asahara and continue to pose a potential terrorist threat. This is because the conditions, i.e., a rigid society that stifles individualism and a craving for a spiritual experience among many Japanese, which led to the creation of the cult in the 1980s, still exist in the Japanese society. At the same time, the cult's nerve-gas attacks have altered the country's self-image as a haven of public safety, and the Japanese public is now wary of the activities of such fringe sects as the Asahara; the cult is kept under constant surveillance by Japan's Public Security Investigation Agency to pre-empt a revival of its violent activities......
