Experiential education comes in many shapes and sizes

Experiential education is widely implemented across a range of topics and mediums - for example, outdoor education, service learning, internships, and group-based learning projects. Many educational projects are experiential, but don't refer to themselves as such (e.g., excursions, physical education, manual arts, drama, art, and so on)."

The value of experiential education is instrumental to my learning theory. I remember the first time I assisted in a classroom and saw how valuable it is when utilized correctly.

I was helping with a math lesson in a first grade classroom. The teacher had drawn an equation the board of 2 plus 3 equals 5. She had the students first discuss the equation and talk about things that could be added. The list was endless and fun and included pet dogs, cats, little sisters and brothers. It had the students laughing and paying close attention. The next step was to write the equation on the board. She had them first draw it in desk top sand boxes then write it on the paper. The final element was using glue for art class. They were to glue three beans, macaronis or pipe cleaners in a group and then two in another group and then five in a third group with a marking indicating which direction the addition equation went. This opened the door to teaching subtraction by explaining the reversing of the bean equation would also work if it was subtraction.

I knew then how important experiential education was as I realized the children who had learning disabilities of various types were having the lesson taught in ways they could understand without having to use a special assistant and without making those students feel that they were different.

CONCLUSION

The importance of a learning theory was not clear to me until I began to study the work of other theorists and realize how their ideas applied to the way I wanted to educate students.

My personal learning theory involves a combination of Bandura and experiential learning so that the students who have different learning abilities will all be able to participate and gain the knowledge. In addition the modeling of organized behavior on my part will help the students figure out how to become more organized and efficient students. As I move into my teaching career I will continue to evaluate and update my learning theory as I develop professionally.
