Currently, I am in my second year, near the end of completing that transfer degree, from Santa Monica College.

I also have a great deal of interest in my culture and in keeping contacts with other people who are from the area where I was born. Especially people my own age who are experiencing the challenge of being between the old culture and the new one, which are pretty different in many ways. Being a first generation immigrant is a difficult thing to be as parents and other sin their generation and their parents generation have cultural expectations that are very different from those of other children who were born and grew up in the U.S. There is a lot of pressure to both be myself, and be expressive because that is why my parents immigrated to the U.S. In the first place. To give me opportunities I would not have had in Iran. Yet, they also have very high expectations for me with regard to respecting them and respecting the cultural values of Iran, which are fairly liberal in the scheme of the region, but are also dominated by faith and a respect for it, that is simply not seen in most of the U.S. families I know. To help myself meet and get to know other immigrants from Iran and elsewhere in the Middle East I became a member of the Persian Club at Santa Monica college and became its Vice President and then the club Coordinator.

I am currently serving as the technology coordinator, building and updating the club website and remaining very active as a member.

When I moved to the U.S.I decide that I would not let my dream to be work in computer information technology get lost, no matter how hard I had to work to make it happen. I worked very hard in high school and now I am working very hard in college, despite having to work while attending school. There are still many pressures from family and others to contribute to the household and help out as much as possible. These pressures and others have created a great many barriers for me, but they are not pressures that are going to make me give up, in fact they have made me a stronger person.

I hope this very brief introduction has served to help you see that I would make a valuable student at your University and that I would continue to work very hard to complete a degree in Computer Science and to seek employment on the cutting edge of computer technology development.

Thank you again for you time,

Shayan Panahian Jand.....
