Senator Hall,

I hope that this letter finds you in good health as you continue to serve the state and the nation at large. The main purpose of this letter is to highlight the importance of the proposed S 821 bill, otherwise referred to as Brump Donald bill in Texas state. The Bill proposes a 1 cent tax on all foods that contain added salt being sold in stores and other outlets. I write in absolute support of the S 821 bill since once the bill goes through and is implemented, it is apparent that al the foods that contain added salts like processed cheese, processed meats, caned vegetables, chicken broth and soy sauce among others will significantly increase in price. The funds that shall be raised from the 1 cent increase will be channeled towards helping in the prevention programs dealing with cardiovascular diseases and childhood obesity. As an elder brother who has several siblings and younger relatives, I would like see them grow up not only healthy bit also aware of the dangers of added salt hence being able to educate other children of their class and social groups. This bill is the best tool that there is to make this dream possible for the younger generation.

The salt intake has been associated with cardiovascular diseases, obesity especially among the children as well as hypertension. The intake of salt in the processed foods is known to increase thirst and most children will resolve to sweetened soft drinks in order to quench the thirst. This increases the intake of calories which are responsible for childhood obesity, hypertension and possible stroke if the condition is not managed. The resulting health conditions as a result of high calories intake often leads to children being absent from school and losing precious learning hours. The passing of this bill will help raise funds that will be used to initiate informative intervention measures particularly among children and also persuade people to make healthier choices by buying salt free products since the foods with added salt will be relatively more expensive than they are now.

This S 821 bill is very timely to the state of Texas as it will help curb the rising number of children who suffer obesity and other cardiovascular diseases. Every support that it will get will be appreciated as that will be s step towards helping children across Texas and serve as an example to other states.
