QI JournalOverviewQI drives excellence in patient care and fuels the optimization of healthcare systems (Greenes & Del Fiol, 2023). Nurses must combine their clinical expertise with QI principles in accordance with the American Association of Colleges of Nursing’s Essentials, particularly those emphasizing Domain 5: Quality and Safety. This journal entry is a reflection on the knowledge gained from the course, the significance of QI, a nurse’s role in QI, and the connection to AACN’s Domain 5 competencies and sub-competencies.Importance of Quality Improvement in HealthcareContinuous Quality Improvement improves patient safety, improves patient outcomes, increases efficiency, and compels nurses to adhere to the highest standards of nursing excellence (Deerhake & O’Brien, 2021). QI initiatives, first and foremost, are meant to reveal and reduce risks associated with patient safety—such as common nursing errors, medication errors, etc. QI should create a safe environment in which nurses can work. When they make safety the top priority, nurses help to prevent adverse events from occurring.QI also focuses on improving patient outcomes by way of continuous monitoring and refining of healthcare. It is not just about safety but also about improving what already exists in terms of how care is given. It is about becoming more efficient, too, in the delivery of care so that nothing is wasted in terms of resources.Overall, national safety and quality standards help nurses to maintain consistency and reliability in patient care (Oldland et al., 2020).
