HISTORY AND POTENTIAL IMPACT OF CLIMATE CHANGE

History of Climate Change

Climate change can be traced back to the 19th century when ice ages together with different natural changes were first noted, and effect of greenhouse first identified. Most recently, the glaciers are melting. Water levels in the seas are increasing. Evidence of increased temperatures in the atmosphere is evident from these. For the last ten years, rampant cases of tornados, winter freezes, wildfires, tropical cyclones, and floods have been common in the US and across the globe. Besides, environmental temperatures have risen steadily over the past century. Today, human activities have advanced, with their eventual effects resting on the environment (McNall, 2012). The use of nuclear energy is a devastating blow to the sustenance of the natural state of the cosmos. The use of fossil fuels has increased the levels of carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, which are at alarming levels.

The global climate change has been changing throughout history. For over 650,000 years, there has been a quantification of seven cycles of glacier retreat and progress. The sudden end of the latest ice took place approximately 7,000 years ago and marked the beginning of the modern era of climate change also focusing on human civilization.
Moreover, almost half of the earth that was covered by forests has been cleared out for human purposes. This is measurable. Human activities have become universal. Many natural habitats have been depleted. The climate is literally changing because of these human activities. All these features are measurable.

From the evidence of climate change, it can be said that human activities, largely, have contributed to it (In Black, 2013). Climate change is a real occurrence and is not a hoax. Human endeavors have been considered to contribute to climate change, and hence to have a larger share in strategies that can be put in place to cater for such change. As indicated by the evidence of climate change over the history of time, climate change has changed the ways of human interaction with the environment. The new wave of civilization has been a major force in its perpetuation today.
