In the study, a survey research method is put to use to facilitate the collection of primary data relating to the social phenomenon. The primary data is obtained from a selected sample of fully qualified and registered nurses. To guide the study's undertaking existing theoretical literature relating to sociological and nursing aspects is considered.

The social issue the article sought to examine or explain.

The article seeks to determine the factor contributing to the growing need to undertake action pushing for reforms in the nursing profession. The desirable reforms comprise of improvements in the working conditions and pay packages for nurses. Precisely, the article looks at work satisfaction and militancy attitude among the working population at Queensland. The researcher's interest consists of accessing the social ramification of a widespread unrest in the nursing profession given the rising militancy in the nursing profession.

The previous academic literature that guided the study

The researcher draws upon the historical teachers struggle to attain an improvement in the professional image and social status in society. The Researcher looks at the negotiations for higher wages and better work conditions in the labor negotiations by teachers as a mirror image of the developing unrest in the nursing profession.

Concepts that needed to be "operationalized" into measurable variables

The study concentrated on assessing the rising militancy in the nursing profession by evaluating nurses' satisfaction with the work. The key areas in this assessment comprised of alienation from work, forms of industrial activities and militant actions and other strategies deployed with an aim to bringing about change in the nursing profession. These three aspects gave rise to seven (7) variables that the researcher intended to measure and operationalize for the study's needs. The chosen sociological needs are independent and intervening variables: work satisfaction, union support, personal alienation new professional autonomy and image of nursing. The dependent variable: support for strike action and support for change to work conditions.

Data collection methods
