In terms of Theseus's attitude towards marriage, Shakespeare follows this in the way he manifests himself with regards to third parties who are to get married in imposing the law of the nation of which he is king. In the first act of the play, Theseus appears as being undecided about the decision he needs to make. On one hand, there is a law that he needs to respect and, indeed, enforce. On the other hand, he talks with both Egeus and Demetrius in order to try to reach a different decision by negotiating a third solution (which is somewhat similar to the way he deals when problems appear in his relationship with Hippolyta - through discussion and negotiation rather than through imposing his will).
