The employee suggestion system is described as a wide range of efforts organizations undertake to seek for and use input from their employees in order to achieve cost savings. Organizations also undertake these initiatives to enhance product quality, customer service, working conditions, and workplace effectiveness and efficiency. While the efforts range from using suggestion boxes to executing formal programs to evaluate ideas and rewards, they result in a variety of ideas like simple improvements of work life quality or larger streamlining measures to reduce costs in the entire organization. The main reason for increased use of the suggestion system by employers to plan for increased employee engagement is because such systems create a win-win situation. The win-win situation contributes to increased employee engagement and input as well as enhanced efficiency and cost-savings for workers.

While only a minimal number of employees have the spark of genius that contributes to a patent, every worker has the capability to generate suggestions that can result in profitable innovations for the organization (Henderson, 2006, p.352). Employers have traditionally used suggestion boxes as part of the employee suggestion system to encourage increased involvement.
