She never learns to speak English well. She routinely embarrasses her patron (Jogi) by talking loudly and somewhat ignorantly in public. She never fully becomes the ideal vision of Westernization that he initially attracts him to her (she is said to have a "physical similarity" that strongly resembles a popular American silent film actress of the time) (Schneider). Her failure to Westernize, then, symbolizes that the notion of the Modern Girl will fail in that same endeavor. Regardless of how hard Jogi tries to modernize himself and his erotic love interest, he and her still remain Japanese and of that that nationality's culture.

The conception of the modern girl is largely viewed as a threat to the modern Japanese woman because of the desire for her to fully immerse (or rather lose) herself in Western culture. Such a full immersion would inevitably not leave enough room for true Japanese culture.
At the same time, this conception of the Modern Woman allows for a degree of liberation from the new gender roles of modern Japanese society due to the "private erotic idyll" (No author) of that concept. The Modern Girl is very free with her sexuality, as Naomi's infidelities and "prostitution" (No author) indicate. There is liberalness in such sexuality, particularly when compared to the conventions of typical Japanese culture.

In conclusion, the Modern Girl notion is one that is highly steeped in Western influences. As such, it is highly significant that Namoi never quite achieves this level of Westernization. This fact allows for the reader to infer that the author is suggesting that such Westernization cannot be achieved by the Japanese woman. It even alludes to the fact that the author considers this realization negative, in nature.
