Texas Politics

There are vast differences in the ideological beliefs of the political parties in Texas. Their stances on a number of issues ranging from education to immigration are vastly different. Furthermore, there relationship and views to the role of the Federal government are also substantially different. For example, the Texan Republic Party strongly emphasizes their sovereignty and states (Republican Party of Texas, 2014):

"We strongly urge the Texas Legislature ignore, oppose, refuse, and nullify any federal mandated legislation which infringes upon the states' 10th Amendment Right. All federal enforcement activities in Texas must be conducted under the auspices of the county sheriff with jurisdiction in that county."

By contrast the Democratic Party makes little mention of the relationship with the Federal Government

The Texas Republican party has a platform that represents a more extreme version of the Federal party's platform on the whole. They take a strong stand on things like socialism and securing the boarder. They also take a hard position on the right to bear arms and defend themselves. They also take a strong stand on climate change recognize it as a political agenda. However, recently in the Senate, there was only one Republican (Roger Wicker (R-Mississippi)) that voted against an amendment that stated climate change was real and not a hoax (Plait, 2015).

Therefore this seems to indicate that the GOP is not unified on their position on climate change.

The Democratic Platform is focused more on principles of equality and equal rights than the Republican position that focuses more on liberty and freedom. The Democrats directly oppose the educational funding positions that the Republicans have taken: (Texas Democratic Party):

"The Republican legislative majority has shortchanged education funding every session since taking control of both houses… Republicans refused to pay for the continued rapid growth of our student population and cut dollars for current students -- to the tune of $5.4 billion over two years, a reduction of almost $600 per student each year."

The Democrats are also opposed to other educational issues such as the push towards standardized testing and making higher education affordable.

Another major point of differences in the parties is their stance on healthcare. Texas Democrats believe health care is a right, not a privilege reserved for those able to pay for it. Texas Democrats oppose efforts by Republican politicians to repeal health insurance reform and return America to the disastrous system….....
