Thematic analysis is a common data analysis technique in qualitative research. The technique essentially involves identifying themes and patterns within a set of data and grouping the themes into categories (Bryman, 2008). Thematic analysis is advantageous as it allows the researcher flexibility in data analysis. In addition, the researcher is able to go beyond individual experiences. Nonetheless, there could be a number of limitations. For instance, the researcher may miss some nuances. In the original research in Agostinho's (2004) article, for instance, it is possible that the researcher missed some nuances relating to the use of e-learning in the higher education setting. The analysis involved not only thematic analysis, but also content analysis. This can be viewed as one of the major strengths of the data analysis process in the original study. Content analysis helps the researcher to derive contextual meanings of the collected data (Bryman, 2008). As a result, the researcher may arrive at interpretations that may not be reached using thematic analysis.

The underlying inductive logic used to analyze the data is situated in the assertion that knowledge is subjective or contextual.
This is the core of the inductive approach. The inductive approach means that the researcher first collects data and then analyzes the data to develop a theory or to explain the research phenomenon. A major attribute of the data collection process is that the researcher cultivates a closer relationship with the subject (Bryman, 2008). This is informed by the need to gain an in-depth understanding of the research phenomenon. This means that the researcher interprets the collected data in a manner that provides a rich, contextual explanation of the research phenomenon. While the inductive logic provides an in-depth understanding of the research phenomenon, the challenge of generalizability is common. For instance, it would be quite difficult to generalize the findings beyond the two case studies included in the original research in Agostinho's (2004) article. Nonetheless, techniques such as providing rich descriptions, member checks, triangulation, prolonged engagement, and audit trails can enhance the transferability of qualitative findings.
