In this essay, the author will compare and contrast the similarities and differences of watching a movie in a movie theater vs. watching a movie on a television set in the home. We will address the following "movie experience" topics in the essay, including the total sensory experience, environment, cost, and convenience.

Total Sensory Experience-Pros and Cons

The reason to go to the theater to see a movie is an obvious one and this deals with projection. On a small screen of a TV, a great amount of detail can not be seen. In the author's living room, the sofa distance is 10 feet (probably an average distance), and the eye just resolve it. At the movies, these are not an issue. Also, there is stereo sound. However, watching a film on TV can be better than watching it in theaters. In the opinion of this author, this largely depends upon the quality of the surround sound system and how big the TV is (small or big screen). This does not mean that enjoying movies needs to be sacrificed. There is much to be said for big screen viewing. However, the home provides a very comfortable, common, and intimate place for families and individuals to enjoy old or newly released films. When one chooses to watch a film at home, this is comfortable and inexpensive . Watching a movie at home is convenient and cost less instead of going to the theater and spending as much money.

The environment is more intimate at home. At the movie theater, the environment is more of a group activity.

Traditionally, one goes out to the movies in a group. It is hard to get a group of people around a small television set. In terms of environment, a film can also be intimate. Most of us have had a date where we take the person out to the movies. Rarely do we invite a new date home to watch television.

C. Cost

In terms of cost, it is always much cheaper to rent and see a film at home. At home, the cost entails renting the DVD and buying some snacks at the super market. Going to the movies has traditionally been more expensive. The theater company has to cover overhead on the building. Additionally, drinks and snacks are expensive in a theater. Ticket prices are usually more expensive.

D. Convenience

It is very inconvenient to journey to a theater. Now, many of the movie theaters are in strip malls or other locations that demand driving, parking and other hassles involved with going to a physical location. However, when one watches the film at home, there are none of these problems. The DVD can be rented presently in an automated kiosk near many convenience stores, or even ordered online and delivered to the one's house. The snacks can be picked up at the convenience store or local market for a fraction of the price.

E. Conclusion

To sum up, watching a film at the theater as opposed to watching it at home involves figuring out what you want to achieve in terms of total sensory experience, environment, cost and convenience. Things vary for different groups and different contexts and it is these factors that control the relativity.....
