For Hispanic students, for instance, the culture that emphasizes strong family allegiance may limit a student from applying to college or from attending college far away from home (Curry & Milsom, 2017). In light of this, it may be prudent for the counselor to conceptualize the career and academic needs of learners from different cultural backgrounds and to develop targeted interventions to promote equity for such students. For instance, for Latino students, use of Latino mentors and role models to provide information to parents regarding their children’s career and educational pathways may go a long way towards promoting equity on college access for this group of students.Another crucial ethical consideration relates to achievement gaps that exist as a result of systemic oppression, placing ethnic minorities at a disadvantage relative to other groups (Curry & Milsom, 2017). For instance, African-Americans report higher rates of mental illness, suspension from school, academic deficiency, and emotional disturbance than their white counterparts as a result of systemic discriminatory practices. These achievement gaps can be psychologically damaging to students, leading to poor academic outcomes and inadequate college and career access. It is prudent that the counselor takes these factors into consideration when developing their counseling interventions for underrepresented groups.
