Brick City:

Season One, Episode Five - Red October

Urban politics are often at the forefront of American society. One can see them on the news nightly, and further hear about them in newspapers or from fellow citizens. Often, however, urban politics deal with issues that are difficult for society to resolve, such as urban violence or poverty. This essay will present a short analysis of episode five of the Sundance Channel show Brick City, and will focus on how violence is portrayed in this particular segment.

The topic of this video deals with the city of Newark, which has just witnessed the 50th murder of the year. This particular occurrence, needless to say, raises concerns about public safety and the policies enacted to keep the public safe heretofore. Indeed, the city does struggle with violence and the crimes that can be committed in the absence of light. One such murder involved a police officer, as the article "Newark Violence Escalates" states. In this article, the reader is presented, just as in the video, with a seemingly resurgent, unstoppable violence. This includes the shooting of the said officer as aforementioned, but also the shooting of an innocent bystander.

The video in itself is also very graphic, and truly complements the news stories presented in the article, giving the viewer an eerie feeling of being right in the middle of the city, and truly in the midst of the action that is constantly taking place by the side of the police officers called to various scenes of violence. Thus, the purpose of the video is to portray this violence as clearly and as specifically as possible, which also has the implications that other factors (such as politics or law enforcement) that also have an important role in the daily dealings with violence in Newark. The show is phenomenally successful in this regard.

The strengths of the video are therefore the ability of the director to make everything look completely realistic. The segments are filmed in a way which combines music with dialogue, and real-time footage of what happens in the police cars that are….....
