Boron is a mineral that has seen some controversy in the past. Seen as a poison for bug eradication and a cleaning agent in laundry, boron is often seen as something that should not be ingested when it is called ‘Borax’. However, boron has several uses and ingesting the mineral can be beneficial for those dealing with problematic bone metabolism and osteoporosis. Several new studies have shown boron’s positive effect on bone metabolism in both human studies and rat studies.

One study aimed to understand potential effects of daily boron on postmenopausal women. They saw a positive effect from daily boron use. “Serum osteocalcin level in the CC genotype was significantly higher compared to the TC genotype in boron-exposed group (P???0.05). Our study suggests that daily boron intake of 1?mg/L may affect bone metabolism in postmenopausal women positively” (Boyacioglu, Orenay-Boyacioglu, Yildirim, & Korkmaz, 2018, p. 52). Boron allows the minerals calcium, magnesium, and phosphorus to work better within the body. It also allows for better absorption of vitamin D thus improving bone metabolism in those who supplement with it (Boyacioglu, Orenay-Boyacioglu, Yildirim, & Korkmaz, 2018). Boron is not a widely known mineral and is included as trace minerals in the quantity of 2mg in multivitamin/mineral combinations.
However, standalone supplements are rare, lending to the lack of understanding between most people of what boron can do.

Another study aimed to investigate effects of systematically administered boron in the form of boric acid regarding several key measures “…osteoporosis-related bone alterations, alveolar bone loss, receptor activator of nuclear factor kappa-b ligand (RANKL) expressions, and mandibular bone density in experimental periodontitis model in osteoporotic rats” (Toker, Ozdemir, Balci Yuce, & Goze, 2016, p. 331). The rats saw improvements in certain areas regarding bone loss. This study confirms what the previous one did regarding the potential positive effects of boron on bone metabolism.

The results were so that it showed boron can potentially be used within the context of osteoporosis and periodontitis. “Within limitations of this study, we conclude that boric acid may decrease alveolar bone loss in a rat model with periodontitis and osteoporosis.” (Toker, Ozdemir, Balci Yuce, & Goze, 2016, p. 331). Should this translate to humans, it may be a positive alternative treatment for people, namely women, looking to improve their bone density. It may even become a treatment method for osteoporosis depending on proven efficacy.
