Without a doubt, the contributions of Hippocrates and those of the authors of the Greek tragedies are enormous, due to the fact that their wisdom, knowledge and insight into human nature and human thought can still be felt even today some two thousand years after the Classical Period of ancient Greece. Yet the Greeks were also the creators of some of the most splendid and beautiful buildings ever to grace the world, especially the Parthenon in the city of Athens, located atop the great and ancient acropolis. Known in ancient times as the temple to Athena, the patron goddess of the city, this structure "was meant as a house for its divinity and not as a gathering place for worshippers" (119), meaning that Athena herself was thought to inhabit it, much like her own personal home.

In conclusion, it is clear that Professor Martin has written a thoroughly entertaining and highly informative book, one that encompasses the entire and extremely long history of ancient Greece, beginning with its Stone Age foundation in the dim past and up to the Hellenistic Age when Greece prospered as never before and effectively influenced almost every other culture in the Western world.
As Professor Martin explains it, "It is very important to add that Athenian prominence in the story of ancient Greece is no accident and reflects the unprecedented changes that occurred in the culture and society of Athens" (124), changes that continue to be reflected in modern-day society to such an extent that one cannot separate the ancient past from the present nor from the future......
