This particular project specifically discusses recruiting, selecting and retaining a multi-ethnic, multi-racial faculty, but what if that just doesn't work out? How does a district address the needs of minorities if they just don't get the candidates they actually want? To quote a public school teacher I overheard one time, "If there are only two Black or Hispanic kids in the whole school, and people are not thoughtful and nurturing, it spoils education for those two." These days, colleges of Education are addressing these issues and school districts are forming such entities as "diversity taskforces."

Another facet to retaining people has to do with inter-district mobility. Schools are very different now than even 20 years ago. Each building has a different philosophy, different programs and obviously, different faculty and staff. The ability to try out different matches to find maximum comfort for the employee can be a very important aspect of retention.

An important aspect of every teacher's professional practice is continuing education. Research constantly offers new strategies, new possibilities for doing a better job, for making a subject clearer, for more effective ways of handling students, both regular and problem students.
No Child Left Behind makes this more imperative since schools will be judged by the performance of their students which reflects on the performance of teachers in meeting standards of instruction. Teachers need time and opportunity to go and learn. Many teachers go to workshops and such on their own, but it makes sense to as thoroughly as possible support the teachers in these efforts. As was mentioned earlier it isn't appropriate to take advantage of a person's willingness to work hard.

Finally, the issues of money and recognition as aspects of retention: Earlier it was said that team players, are among other things, people who don't worry as much about recognition as about getting the job done, the problem solved. However, if a district wants to keep their team players, it better not forget the importance of recognition for jobs well d one. That district also better not forget that recognition in the pay envelope is a major factor of our culture. It may sound flip to say, "Don't clap, throw money," but like it or not that is a major form of recognition in our society......
